يُعدّ لبنان في التاريخ الحديث للمنطقة، مركزاً أساسياً للتعليم العالي، حيث شهد حتى منتصف خمسينيات القرن الماضي، تأسيس 6 جامعات على يد مؤسسات دينية مسيحية، أو هي كانت جزءاً من جامعات أجنبية ارتبط إنشاء فروع لها ببعثات إرساليات تبشيرية اعتمدت على التعليم لنشر أفكارها، كالجامعتين الأمريكية واللبنانية الأمريكية (سابقاً كلية بيروت الجامعية BUC) والجامعة اليسوعية. وفي النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، وتحديداً حتى عام 1991، تم تأسيس 11 جامعةً، منها تسع جامعات أنشأتها مؤسسات دينية مثل الرهبانيات والبطريركيات والمجلس الشيعي الأعلى ودار الفتوى وجمعيات دينية أخرى

The current student movements at the Lebanese University can best be described as incredibly timid and reserved, especially in comparison to what the Lebanese University currently faces. Professors take to social media to express their grievances and complaints, as the Lebanese University (LU) is embroiled in a serious conspiracy.
